With an approximate area of  743,500 hectares ( nearly 5% of the country's area), Nepal homes 242 wetlands which are often considered as the most productive ecosystems of the world.

The wetlands offer habitat to wide range of species of flora and fauna which make them ideal choices for wildlife safari and birdwatching. Further, the wetlands of Nepal range from torpid ponds to the glacial lakes which are treat for eyes to watch as well. Nepal is committed in the conservation of these sites of immense importance and has signed the Ramsar Convention in 1988.

Nepal has 10 sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites) with a surface area of 60, 561 hectares.
