The return of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) has once again placed Nepal’s sporting scene in the spotlight. More than just a cricket tournament, the NPL has evolved into a cultural and economic catalyst—energizing communities, inspiring young athletes, and increasingly contributing to the country’s expanding sports-tourism sector.
Over the past decade, Nepal’s reputation as an adventure destination has been well established. But with the rise of structured sports leagues like the NPL, football tournaments, volleyball championships and many other sports the country is showcasing a new dimension, one that combines the thrill of competitive sports with the natural beauty and hospitality Nepal is known for.
NPL’s Impact on Sports Tourism
The NPL brings together domestic and international players, drawing thousands of fans to stadiums and an even larger audience online. Matches hosted in cities such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Biratnagar have helped diversify tourist footfall beyond traditional trekking and mountaineering routes. The tournament not only boosts occupancy in hotels and restaurants but also stimulates local businesses, transportation services, and event-based tourism activities.
Tour operators have already begun packaging sports-focused itineraries, allowing visitors to explore Nepal while attending key cricket fixtures. This integration of sports entertainment with travel experiences reflects a promising new direction for Nepal’s visitor economy.
Tourism Leaders Recognize Its Potential

Tourism stakeholders have also acknowledged the long-term opportunities the NPL presents.
Nepal Tourism Board’s CEO, Mr. Deepak Raj Joshi, in a recent video message, applauded the increasing number of sporting events being organized across the country. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating:
“The growing number of sports events nationwide shows our potential. We appreciate the dedication of our sports associations. Stronger partnerships are essential if we are to position Nepal as a premier sports tourism destination.”
Similarly, the hospitality sector recognizes how major leagues like the NPL are adding new energy to Nepal’s tourism landscape. Mr. Vinayak Shah, President of Hotel Association Nepal, noted:
“As NPL gains both national and international recognition, it proves that with this level of infrastructure, sports tourism can flourish in Nepal. We have the environment, the enthusiasm, and now the events to support it.”

A Pathway to a Diversified Tourism Economy
With improved stadium facilities, better event management, and rising fan engagement, Nepal is gradually building a strong foundation for sports-based travel. The NPL, in particular, has emerged as a powerful platform for showcasing Nepal’s capability to host large-scale international sports events.
If nurtured well, sports tourism can:
- Extend the tourist season beyond traditional peak periods
- Create new jobs related to event management, hospitality, and sports infrastructure
- Encourage investment in modern sports facilities across provinces
- Promote Nepal globally through broadcast_ events
- Inspire youth participation in sports and foster national pride
The Nepal Premier League is more than a cricketing festival—it is a symbol of Nepal’s evolving identity as a versatile tourism destination. With strong leadership, growing infrastructure, and increasing international visibility, Nepal is well-positioned to integrate sports into its broader tourism development strategy.
Nepal Tourism Board is a national tourism organization of Nepal established in 1998 by an Act of Parliament in the form of partnership between the Government of Nepal and private sector tourism industry to develop and market Nepal as an attractive tourist destination. The Board provides platform for vision-drawn leadership for Nepal’s tourism sector by integrating Government commitment with the dynamism of private sector.
