The Mithila region prides itself in having many ponds and is, therefore, known as the city of ponds in Nepal. Janakpurdham is said to have as many as 72 ancient ponds of historical and mythological importance. Ganga Sagar, known to be the pond which has never dried up since times immemorial is believed to have water from the Seven Seas and all the sacred places making it an important holy site for the devotees. Hindu pilgrims flock in large numbers to take ritual baths in these sacred ponds. Among the ponds, Ganga Sagar, Parshuram Kunda and Dhanusha Sagar are held extremely sacred.
